RV Security
You probably take protecting your family and your belongings very seriously. So why wouldn’t you take protecting your RV just as seriously? RV theft may not be the most glamorous crime that’s taking headlines, but it does happen and it can create a lot of emotional and financial stress for you. Luckily, many of the best ways to protect yourself are both easy and affordable. That’s why Golden Gait Trailers & RVs has provided you with some tips for keeping yourself and your RV safe. If you’d like additional advice, stop by and speak with one of our experienced staff. We proudly serve Charlotte, Columbia, Raleigh, Hickory, Asheville, Myrtle Beach, and Greensboro, North Carolina.
Parking your RV
One of the easiest ways to avoid theft is by being smart about where you park. When you’re at home, you’ll want to find a place that’s out of site and difficult to access without alerting someone. The best place would be a large, covered barn or other enclosed area, although we know this isn’t exactly practical for everyone. As an alternative, you can also rent out storage units or pull it into your backyard. No matter what, keep it off the street. Not only is it more vulnerable there, but many places don’t legally let you leave a vehicle on a public road for an extended period of time.
When you’re out on the road, if you can choose your own spot, try to find a site that’s both out of the way and still around people. The harder a thief has to search to find your RV, the more likely it is they’ll pass you up. However, at the same time, if you don’t isolate yourself so much that you’re not around other campers, then your neighbors are more likely to notice suspicious activity.
Securing your RV
There are some other basic and easy ways to make it harder to access your RV, even if someone locates it and tries to break in. When you leave or at night when you go to sleep, lock all doors and windows and draw the shades. You can also look into getting additional locks, like a hitch lock for towable RVs and a steering wheel lock for motorhomes. For any RV type, consider getting a tire boot for additional security.
Reducing Temptations
Just like you would with a car, one of the most effective ways to avoid a break in is to make your RV less of a target. This means stowing any valuables that might justify the risk to someone looking to make easy money. Hide items like electronics and jewelry when they’re not in use and, for particularly high-ticket items like firearms and ownership papers, you may want to get a safe.
Other Tips
There are a few other tips you can try out if you’re looking to go the extra mile. For example, a security system is by far the most effective way to deter a thief, but it can also be the most expensive. There are also things you can do to help locate your RV should the worst happen, like GPS trackers and tagging.
There are lots of ways to be smart about protecting your RV and your family both when you’re at home and on the road. You may even consider talking around your local RV communities to get some other tips from more experienced campers.
