Motorhome Maintenance Tools
Recently, we’ve been talking a lot about ownership tips for your motorhome, like maintenance and cleaning. But to do all these things properly, you need the right tools. That’s why Golden Gait Trailers & RVs has provided a list of important motorhome maintenance tools to help get you started. If you need additional help, then stop by our location in Concord, North Carolina, near Raleigh and Charlotte, and chat with one of our friendly staff.
The Disclaimer
As you read through our tips, the most important disclaimer to keep in mind is that you shouldn’t use anything that isn’t meant for your RV. This might require getting an RV-specific product and double-checking in your owner’s manual that certain chemicals or tools won’t be harmful to your RV. There’s no point in making things worse when you’re trying to make things better.
Exterior Tools
We’ll start on the outside and work our way in. Keep in mind that the skin of your RV takes the most abuse from the elements, so keeping up on maintenance will help prolong its usefulness.
RV Wash
The easiest way to take care of your RV exterior is to keep it clean. This will mean buying RV wash so you have a product that’s gentle, but still gets the job done. If you really want to give it that extra shine or another layer of protection, consider getting RV wax, or a two-in-one product.
Silicone Sealant
Every once in a while, you’ll probably come across a hole or tear in your RV. This is natural, but it can cause some serious damage. Make sure you have some sort of silicone sealant to fill these holes. If you need to reconnect two parts of the RV, consider some sort of bonding compound or contact cement.
Slide-Out Lubricant
If your slide-outs start sticking or underperforming, you can bet that’s going to be some serious change out of your pocket to repair. Keep them well-lubricated with slide-out lubricant so you can avoid this.
Tire Pressure Gauge
Your tires are an important part of traveling safely and efficiently. Even if you can drive on them, an improperly inflated tire will seriously hurt your fuel economy, as well as make your driving less safe. You should have a tire pressure gauge to help you monitor the PSI of your tires, even if you have a tire pressure monitoring system installed.
Interior Tools
When it’s time to move inside the RV, you might run into problems of a slightly different nature, so you’ll want a different set of tools.
Concrobium
Concrobium is a product used to get rid of those ugly mold stains. As hard as you may try to reduce moisture, you might still find yourself tackling minor build-up, and this can help get your RV in tip-top shape again. Keep in mind that if mold keeps appearing inexplicably, you might have a bigger problem on your hands, like a leak.
Toilet Deodorizer
This can help make a messy problem a little more manageable. Toilet deodorizer helps break up things that might be clogging your black water tank, though the chemicals can be harsh, so we don’t recommend using it if you don’t need it.
Replacement Light Bulbs
This can be an easy one to forget, but just like the light bulbs in your home, the light bulbs in your RV have a limited lifespan. Save yourself a trip to the store and have replacements stored somewhere around the RV.
Engine
Because your motorhome comes with its own drivetrain, you’ll want to have supplies to take care of the engine and other mechanical parts.
Engine Fluids
This should include coolant, motor oil, and even brake fluid. You might also want fuel treatment if you know your RV spends a lot of time packed away in storage.
Belts and Fuel Filters
This one might be for the more technically savvy, but having a spare belt on hand can help you get back on the road in an emergency. The same goes for fuel filters. A clogged filter probably won’t create a dangerous situation, but sometimes it’s helpful to at least have these spare parts available to you, just in case.
Toolkit
If nothing else, you’ll want a general toolkit that you can pick up at your local store. This should include things like a multi-purpose tool, wire cutters, screwdriver set, hammer, and other basic tools. You can’t always know what’s coming down the road, but having these fundamental tools may come in handy more often than you think.
