Buying An RV For Remote Work
If you don't own a camper yet, you can shop models with remote work in mind.
Consider the following factors:
- Your privacy needs. If you make phone calls for work, for example, you'll likely want a room with a closed door.
- Your lighting needs. You may want access to natural light or a room with enough outlets for lamps.
- Your noise tolerance. If noise interferes with your job, seek out campers with soundproofing features, extra insulation in the walls, and quieter running power systems.
Modifying An RV For Remote Work
Once you own a camper, you can tweak it to better serve your remote working needs.
Secure Versus Store Office Items
You'll likely have a collection of office items, from an office chair to pens and paper. These items will need to either be secured or stored while the RV is on the road. Otherwise, they will get tossed about and likely lost or broken.
Larger items often benefit from being secured. For example, you can fasten your desk and chair to the floor or a wall. Smaller items, such as a laptop, can be easily stored in a bag or box.
The Office Desk
There are many options for an office desk. The right approach for you depends on your work, camper, and budget.
Some folks use the surfaces already available in their RV. This can include the dinette, the dashboard on a motorhome, or even a picnic table at the campground.
Others decide to add a desk. This will be an added expense, but it's often much more functional for work. The more you plan on working remotely from your RV, the more important it is to have a well-suited office space.
The desk is usually placed in the bedroom or living room and may require the removal of some existing furniture to create space.
If space is an issue, you can choose a fold out desk. When you aren't working, you can simply fold the desk away.
