The Accessories You Need In Your RV Kitchen
Roaming the countryside in your RV is a great way to relax, let go, and just live a little. Unfortunately, RVs do have their limitations compared to the average brick-and-mortar home, especially when it comes to space. Kitchens in motorhomes and travel trailers, especially, tend to be compact, so they don’t always have the equipment you’re used to.
We know how important home-cooked meals can be to maintaining sanity and budgets, so we here at Golden Gait Trailers & RVs have put together a list of a few essentials that will maximize your space and what you can do with it. If you have more questions or need your own RV to put these nifty accessories in, stop by our store in Concord, North Carolina.
1. Instant Pot or Slow Cooker
These small but powerful tools are vital for any low-effort, low-space meal. Either one will give you a variety of meal options and usable ingredients, and both are incredibly flexible. Instant Pots can cook complicated, rich dishes in minutes, while a slow cooker can give you that long lead-up to delicious food. Both take up little space, can cook anything from rice to stew to bread, and minimize the amount of heat your cooking generates.
2. Portable Grill
If avoiding heat in your RV is a concern for you, a portable grill can cut that down even more than an Instant Pot or slow cooker. Take the cooking outside entirely! There are plenty of small grills available and they take up very little space. Bring the barbecue with you and make burgers, hotdogs, grilled chicken, and any other classics you want - you can even grill fish you catch on your trip!
3. Sink / Stove Top Cover
Counter space in the average RV is at a premium, but you can add to it with a sink or stove top cover. These covers do exactly what their name suggests, turning your built-in appliance and fixtures into a surface ready for chopping veggies or holding dishes. These double as cutting boards, when they’re not covered in other supplies, adding even more functionality to your kitchen. Most of these can be folded up and stowed away when you’re done with them, meaning they take up very little storage space.
4. Shatterproof Dishware
Your typical dishes may work fine for an apartment or house, but RVs are mobile. Glass and ceramic won’t cut it if you hit a bump in the road or take a corner too quickly, and there aren’t many places to throw away the ones you drop, either. Corelle® dishes are more durable and reusable so you don’t need to worry about heaps of paper or plastic - plus, they’re lighter than most dishes, so you can cut down on your RV’s weight.
5. Sturdy Cookware
Dishes aren’t your only concern - pots and pans can take up a lot of space, and having them clang around while your driving isn’t good for your sanity. Only bring a handful of cookware, preferably with removable handles and lids so that they stack easier. Cast-iron pans and dutch ovens are a good investment as well, given that they can cook a variety of dishes and can do so on the stove top or in an oven. Breakfast, sausages, and cornbread can all be made in cast iron, saving space and maximizing your menu.
6. Immersion Blender
Immersion or hand blenders are small, powerful devices that can fill a number of functions and prepare a variety of ingredients. Many don’t even require gas or electricity! These small machines can shred, mince, dice, and emulsify most fruits and vegetables, allowing you to easily create pasta sauces, smoothies, and pureed soups. Some even come with a whisk attachment that can whip eggs!
There are many more options and appliances that you can include in your RV kitchen, but these basics will give you a head start on being fully equipped without filling your storage.
